The museum has hosted the following special exhibitions:

THE DARKENED HELSINKI exhibition

This exhibition portrayed the life of regular families in Helsinki during the bombing of the city in 1943–1944. The title refers to the blanket covered windows of apartments. Blankets were used to hide the lights from the bombing planes flying over the city.

The exhibition opened in 2004 and it has became a permanent feature in the museum.

The Civil Defence Association of Helsinki 70 years special exhibition 15.1.2011 – continues until further notice

The Civil Defence Association of Helsinki was established on 31 January 1941. School inspector Aaro Huuskonen was elected as first chairman of the new association. The special exhibition goes through the history of the association.

80 years of Civil Defence in Finland special exhibition in 2007 

20.11.2007  was the 80 anniversary of the establishment of the first civil defence association in Finland. The special exhibition covered the history and present day of civil protection.

Children surviving the war theme exhibition 13.3.–31.12.2006

In 2006, 66 years after the end of the winter war, the museum hosted a theme exhibition showing how children coped during the war years 1939–1945. Toys, handicrafts, art work etc. helped the children during difficult times and many also continued to express themselves through writing or arts as adults.
